Tax Exemptions

A charitable organization may qualify for an exemption from state sales tax in Colorado.  In order to qualify for sales tax exemption, the organization must send a copy of proof of its federally-determined 501(c)(3) status and attach such document to Form DR 0715, “Application for Sales Tax Exemption for Colorado Organizations” and then send the documentation to the Colorado Department of Revenue.  The Department will then review your organization’s documentation to make an assessment as to whether it qualifies for sales tax exemption.  The exemption only applies to state collected sales tax and may not apply to locally collected sales tax levied by home rule cities.  For more information, you can contact the Department of Revenue at (303) 238-7378.

Charitable Solicitationss

With some exceptions, every charitable organization seeking to solicit contributions in Colorado must register with the Licensing Division of the Colorado Secretary of State.  Charitable organizations pay a registration fee of $10.00 for registration statements, amendments and renewals.  The following types of organizations are exempt from the registration requirements: charitable organizations that do not raise or receive gross revenue in excess of $25,000 during a fiscal year; charitable organizations that do not receive contributions from more than 10 persons during a  fiscal year; and churches and political parties.
