Tax Exemptions

A charitable organization which has been approved by the Internal Revenue Service as a tax exempt 501c3 organization is deemed exempt from Alabama corporate income taxes.  The charitable organization is not required to file income tax returns with the Alabama Department of Revenue unless the organization has generated unrelated business income.  For exemption from the imposition of sales and use tax against a charitable organization, you should contact the Alabama Department of Revenue at 334-242-1170 for further information. 

Charitable Solicitations

Organizations and institutions that solicit contributions in or from the State of Alabama must register with the Attorney General’s Office.  The Registration Form may be obtained by visiting the Attorney General’s website.  Certain organizations are exempt from the registration requirement, including, educational institutions, religious organizations, political organizations and charitable organizations which do not receive contributions in excess of $25,000 in a given fiscal year.  The initial registration fee is $25.00.  Registration is good indefinitely, however, financial reports must be filed annually.  For further information regarding charitable registration, you should contact the Consumer Affairs Division at 334-242-7335.
